Across the Divide, has stepped up to the challenge by organising an extreme event for charity in the space of just ten days.

The challenge event specialist was approached by the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help, to manage the operations of an expedition being undertaken in support of the charity by well known adventurers Ben Fogle and James Cracknell.

On October 3, the pair began a 450 mile, non-stop rickshaw marathon from Edinburgh to London, completing the challenge in just 53 hours, to arrive in London in time for the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards. Throughout the duration of the gruelling expedition, Ben and James cycled both day and night, taking it in turns to rest for short periods of time.

Across the Divide is a leading company in organising charity and corporate challenges and was approached by SSAFA to manage the logistics for the Ride of Britain. Across the Divide was responsible for checking the suggested route for deviations and road works, all health and safety elements and the provision of professional staff and medics.

Karen Woodgate from SSAFA says, “We couldn’t have done this without using a company like Across the Divide. With ATD involved, it left us free to concentrate on raising awareness, fundraising and co-ordination. All of the logistics have been handled by Across the Divide and the help provided has been essential.”

Quality and safety is paramount to Across the Divide, and the company provided three highly qualified expedition medics to accompany Ben and James. Throughout the journey, the pair were followed by a high visibility van, carrying the three medics and a rickshaw mechanic.

Ben Fogle says, ‘Behind every challenge and adventure is a logistics team that work tirelessly behind the scenes. Across the Divide provide the support and logistics that ensured a safe and successful adventure. They organised the event in record time without compromising safety or quality. Quite simply, we couldn’t have done it without them’

On Friday 4thSeptember 75 walkers gathered in Castlefields arena for a 10 mile walk around Manchester city centre in aid of UNICEF education projects in Rwanda. As it rained outside walkers prepared for their challenge under the shelter of the marquee and ate hot food from the stalls. Live music was provided by the African group Group Lokita and they were accompanied by the African dancers ‘Afrocats’. The walkers, including a fundraising gorilla and an enthusiastic frog, set off into the night at 7pm. Having visited check points at Trafford Town Hall, Salford Quays, Albert Square and the Urbis the walkers started to arrive back to Castlefields from 10pm and all were back by 11.30pm. The night was a huge success with walkers going forth despite the rain and the wind to raise funds for UNICEF.

A very exciting, record-breaking, and ever so slightly crazy sort of challenge. It involved my little boat, the Indian Ocean and lots of chocolate. April Fools Day 2009 I set out from Western Australia in a bid to become the first woman to row solo across this ocean. 124 days later after 4,000 miles, having eaten all my chocolate, faced storms and mid-ocean capzies , I landed in Mauritius. It was raw and elemental – just as adventure should be.

Participant safety is paramount to Across the Divide and we are continuing to monitor the situation with regards to swine flu and its potential impact on our overseas events. At the time of writing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is not advising against travel to any of the countries in which we operate however, should this advice change we will ensure that both charities and participants are kept informed, and will work with you to make suitable alternative arrangements. Please note that some airlines (most notably British Airways and Virgin Atlantic) will prevent passengers from boarding the plane if they are suspected of carrying the swine flu virus, and that medical screening facilities have been introduced at some international airports. Across the Divide strongly recommends that anyone suffering from flu-like symptoms prior to departure contacts the National Pandemic Flu Service (please refer to the website ) for advice.

Please refer to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for further information regarding swine flu overseas and do not hesitate to contact us on 01460 30456 should you have any further concerns.

Due to huge demand we have managed to secure some more seats on our Great Wall of China Challenge in April 2010.

Our China trek offers a truly unique experience. Not only is it a chance to visit one of the world’s most impressive historical sites but also, as a result of our local contacts, it offers a rare opportunity to trek and camp in a remote part of rural China and to experience local life in its most unspoilt state. In order to maximise the opportunities for interaction and learning about the local history and culture, a team of local translators support all our treks in China. Join us now on this amazing charity challenge.

As part of their management training programme, Amlin, recently completed a 3-day CSR project. The project included 2-days at Newlands Bishop Farm in Solihull, which is a social enterprise run by adults with learning difficulties. The farm is helping young people of all abilities to find their feet and to grow in confidence and ability, whilst providing work, training and social skills for those involved.

The Amlin group built a shelter for recycling rain water which is next to the allotment. The allotment provides food for the farm to sell. They then built an irrigation system to fill water butts (which is about 5,000 litres) which helps water the garden and vegetables. Then finished off by creating a farm shop out of an old stable to sell the produce in. A fantastic achievement by all in just 2 days! Why not do something like this within your company? www.csrprojects.com

Across the Divide has a busy weekend planned.

Tomorrow sees the start of the London to Paris bike ride with Visa – who are fundraising for NSPCC. They cycle over 300 miles in just 4 days but what an amazing trip if not an exhausting one. They will start in the centre of London, cycle through the rolling Kent countryside, across the channel, along quiet French roads and into the heart of Paris finishing at the Eiffel Tower. Why not join us on this event next year?

Then on Saturday sees the NSPCC once again with a cycle event in Buckinghamshire – the Big Bike Ride A stunning cycle event through picturesque countryside with the choice of taking part in a 25km, 50km or 75km route. Why not join them in Sussex next weekend?
