This really takes me back. I was in 2SAI Infantry Walvis Bay and during our basic training we went two weeks to Kuiseb. It was living hell in 50 plus temperatures. I did say to myself then as a 18 year old that one day would return to this special place. Its a place that if you have visited will always stay in your mind. In that two weeks I grew up and was turned from a average person into a potential killer.

Dear Mark,

sorry to put here a comment so unrelated to charity. I came accross your blog and the Across the Divide Expeditions completely by chance, and before I go any further I just wanted to say that I think you do a wonderful job. I wish I was ever that brave. Or at least rich, to help with the charity...

The reason I am writing you today is the following: I found this very impressive picture of the Everest which I believe might be yours (at least that is where the copyright seems to point):
http://www.acrossthedivide.com/images/wallpapers/1280x1024/Western%20face%20of%20Mount%20Everest%208848m,%20Nepal.jpg

If you don't mind, I would like to maybe use it on the cover of my PhD thesis. My thesis has nothing to do with mountains: it's about high energy physics. But what we also happen to look for in high energy physics is peaks (such an unexpected peak in a mass spectrum may indicate the presence of a new particle. Also, making it through a PhD in particle physics leaves you just as exhausted as climbing mountains (I used to do that before, when I still had time for it, that's why I know).

My thesis will be printed in about 200 copies. They will not be sold for any money, in fact I may have to pay quite a bit out of my pocket to have it printed. About 30 of those copies will go to a few libraries in the Nehterlands, where nobody will read them. Another 50 or so will go to my family and friends. The rest will end up in 2 boxes in my appartment and stay there until I will decide to throw them.

Please let me know soon if it would be possible for me to use your picture (which would certainly be the most beautiful aprt of my thesis!). Of course, the appropriate copyright information will be given.

best regards,
 Cristina Galea

I was lucky enough to be a member of the Cancer Research UK trekking party that reached EBC last April. The trek was run by ATD and what a brilliant job the ATD staff members and Sherpas did in looking after us. It's was a trip of a life time for me and one which I will never forget. Every time I see pictures of the Khumbu region I am there again, it has to be seen to be believed, pictures and words do not do it justice.
